Bertha Ione (Swindling) Smythe

Bertha Ione Swindling Smythe, 92, passed away on February 21, 2021 in St. George, UT. Bertha was born on March 6, 1928 in Bismark, ND to Frank P. Joseph Swindling and Bessie May Henderson. In 1934 Bertha, her sister and their mom moved to The Dallas Oregon. Bertha was raised in Oregon with her elder sister, Dorothy Mae Swindling. After graduating high school, Bertha married Leonard Park Smith in 1947, and gave birth to her son, Larry. She later married Jack Harvey Smythe in 1952, who adopted her son. Bertha moved to Moapa Valley in 1961. Bertha and Jack were happily married until his passing in 1979 in a construction accident in Oregon. Bertha moved in with her son Larry and his young family. In 1981, she accepted a job in Barrow, AK as a school district aid. She spent a winter in the most northern point in the U.S. She loved traveling, and went coast to coast several times. She traveled to Alaska every year for 12 years to celebrate birthdays with two of her great-grandchildren. After moving to Moapa Valley, she worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses. She enjoyed working many years for Town & Country Auto. She served as a care-giver for over fifteen years for her neighbor, and served on the Moapa Valley Credit Union Board for eight years.

Bertha loved her son, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She would knit and crochet beautiful clothing for them. She was so talented at knitting, a friend talked her into entering the Clark Co. Fair in 1996, and she won Grand Champion. She would call her five grandchildren on every birthday. She is loved by 15 great grand children.

A Viewing will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2021 at 2-4:00 p.m. at the Moapa Valley Mortuary in Logandale, NV, with Graveside services taking place at the Springfield Memorial Gardens at 7305 Main St., Springfield, OR on Friday, March 5, 2021 at 2:30 p.m. The family invites you to leave a message or memory in their Guest Book at www.moapavalleymortuary.com.
