Burton Cox Obituary

Burton Cox, age 73, died Friday, December 8, 2023 at his home in Moapa, Nevada.  He was born January 21, 1950 in Kanab, Utah to Allen M Cox and Twila Irene Campbell. On April 23, 1982 he married Karen Lee Golfi in the Provo, UT Temple.  They had two daughters before she passed away on December 20, 1990.  On December 11, 1992, he married Mary Ann Dickson in the Las Vegas Temple and moved to Moapa to unite their two families.

Burton grew up in Alton, Utah where he cultivated a love for the outdoors, exploring, hiking and collecting rocks, artifacts and other treasures.  He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Australia East Mission from ’69-71.  After attending Brigham Young University, he graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree from Southern Utah State College in Cedar City, UT. He loved moving houses around both Southern Utah and Nevada, until a back injury transferred him to drawing and city planning.  He later worked as a civil engineer for firms in Las Vegas, Mesquite and Moapa Valley. He retired after working for the Moapa Valley Water District.

As a faithful member of the church, he enjoyed serving in the Temple, ministering to others and his time serving as Bishop of the Moapa Ward.  He will be remembered as a great story teller, a good harmonica player and singer, a smooth dancer and a loyal friend.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann of Moapa, NV; five daughters:  Krysta (Zac) Whitmore of Castle Dale, UT; Amber (Chris) Godfrey of Herriman, UT; Lara (Neil) Heiselbetz of Panaca, NV; Jennifer (Jose) DeMille of Sierra Vista, AZ; Amelia (Steven) Marshall of Overton, NV;  twelve grandchildren;  ten siblings:  Joyce (Glen) Johnson; Melvin Cox; Blane (Judy) Cox; Barton (Marilee) Cox; Irene (Tom) Briggs; Kenneth (Deeona) Cox;  Dean (Connie) Cox;  Jay (Scheri) Cox, and Lewis (Sara) Cox.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Margaret Sorensen.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Moapa Chapel, 1420 Barlow Ave., Moapa, Nevada.  Visitation will be Friday, December 15, 2023 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Moapa Valley Mortuary and again Saturday morning from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. prior to services at the Moapa Chapel.  Interment will be in the Warm Springs Cemetery.  Friends and family are invited to sign our online guest book at www.moapavalleymortuary.com
