Fred Herman Obituary

Frederick Henry Herman, 80, passed away on Friday, November 9, 2018 in St. George, UT. He was born on December 24, 1937 in Pontiac, MI to Fred Frank Herman and Catherine Ann Tipolt. He married Diane Ruth Garver on September 17, 2011 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Livonia, MI.
Fred Herman retired from the Oakland County Sheriff Department after 29 years of service and was an old-time local sheriff deputy who was one of a kind. He was a Cops' cop who "fought crime and corruption to a standstill", his words. Fred was an adventurer who desired to go places and do things since he was a small boy. He grew up across street from Oakland-Pontiac Airport, now Oakland County International Airport, and began working on planes after school. Fred had a passion for flying. Fred served in the United States Army, working on airplanes following the Korean War, and was stationed in France during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Fred attained his pilot’s license in 1982 and flew a 1958 Cessna 175 around Michigan's Lower Peninsula. He would also fly in his own Powered Parachute. He loved engines and would ride anything with a motor in it. Fred was a member of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club travelling the country in a full-dressed 1968 Harley. During his time with the Blue Knights, he was able to visit the Grand Canyon and many historical sites around the country. Fred owned a 1964 Chevy Impala Convertible, attending Woodward Dream Cruise and local car shows. As Fred retired, he began spending his winters in Mesquite, NV. Twice a year, he would travel 2000 miles through nine states between Houghton Lake, MI and Mesquite to enjoy a shorts and T-shirt lifestyle through all of the seasons. He joined the Mesquite High Rollers Motorcycle Club and enjoyed being on the road again. He also loved animals, most recently his trusty companion Harley. He lived the life he wanted and saw the world through his own eyes.

Fred is survived by his loving, devoted wife Diane Ruth Herman, his sister JoAnne (Larry) Lesinski, nephews Larry Jr. (Nicole) Lesinski, Michael (Nichole) Lesinski, his brother in law Clifford (Skip) Church, niece Connie (Wayne) Church-Plummer, nephews Cliff, Jr. (Becky) Church, Fred Rick Church, Jim (Renee) Pickering, Pam (Bill) Jobes, several great nieces and nephews and everyone he ever met! Fred is preceded in death by his parents and dear sister, Sally Ann Church.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Michigan this Spring. The family invites you to leave a message or memory in their Guest Book at www.virginvalleymortuary.com.
