Jerry Haworth Obituary

Jerry Haworth passed away peacefully January 13, 2022 at his home in Henderson, Nevada from thyroid and lung cancer.  Throughout the last 8 years he suffered with heart problems, prostate, lung, and thyroid cancers. He was always patient, kind, and full of gratitude every day for his caregivers, family, and friends.  His last months were difficult; however, he was comforted by the many visitors who expressed their love and support.
Jerry was born on December 13, 1942, in Overton, Nevada to James and Iris Leavitt Haworth. He lived in Overton in his early years where he attended elementary school, then in 1952 his father was hired by Frances Taylor to manage a million- acre ranch which included Warm Springs, Delmar, and Gold Butte, so they moved to the Warm Springs Ranch. Later Howard Hughes bought the ranch and his father continued to manage these properties for the Hughes Corporation. His life on the ranch was a boy’s dream- hunting, ranching, driving cattle on the Delmar range with his father and Frances Taylor, camping, swimming, working at the swimming pools in Warm Springs, showing steers in the livestock fairs, and often helping prepare deep pit barbecues for politicians, attorneys, friends, and family.
He attended Moapa Valley High School where he was able to share his vast knowledge of animals and ranching in the MVHS FFA as chapter Vice President, treasurer, and State Treasurer.  In his freshman year his steer won Grand Champion at the Jaycees County Fair in Las Vegas.  He made enough money to buy a Cadillac in those days, but instead invested in cattle and began his own ranch business.  He was also an outstanding football player and was one of only three  in the school who earned the prestigious All-American Sports Award.
He played football at the University of Nevada Reno, Dixie State, and Weber State College- playing both offense and defense.  Those Dixie and Weber football teams were the only teams in the school’s history to have undefeated seasons.
After college he married, then returned to Moapa Valley, where he raised his three daughters and a son.  He worked as an Instrument Technician for thirty-nine years at the Nevada Power Plant in Moapa, Nevada.
The Haworth family has been involved in Junior Livestock for four generations.  Jerry’s father, Jim Haworth, initiated the Junior Livestock Show at the Jaycees County Fair in Las Vegas in 1956, and Jerry continued that tradition throughout his life with his children and grandchildren. His children won numerous Champion and Reserve Champion awards showing steers, lambs, and pigs in Livestock shows in Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. Jerry was involved in local 4-H as a leader for 22 years and was Junior Livestock President and board member for 40 years, and on the Clark Country Fair Board for fifteen years.
Jerry married Sharon Jensen Walker November 27, 1992, in the Las Vegas Nevada temple, blending Sharon’s five sons and Jerry’s three daughters and a son.  They have been blended and blessed for twenty-nine years together.
Jerry was active in the church and served as Elder’s Quorum President, High Priests Group Leader, High council, mission leader, taught in various organizations, served in the Iowa Des Moines Mission, and served as an ordinance worker in the Las Vegas temple for many years.
After 68 years in Moapa Valley, Jerry moved to Henderson, Nevada.  He is survived by his wife Sharon, son Travis, Melissa Crandus (Michael), Jennifer Flores (Anthony), Brittney, Darren Walker (Traci), Gregory Walker (Angela), Kyle Walker (Daylene), Kevin (Dianna), and Quincy Walker (Jessica), twenty-nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren with two on the way.
Preceding him in death were his parents, James, and Iris Leavitt Haworth, two brothers, David and James, and a sister Rita.
