Lou Long Obituary

Louis René Long, age 92, died Sunday, September 24, 2023 at his home in Overton, Nevada. He was born June 21, 1931 in Los Angeles, California to Louis Locher Jr. and Ellen Melissa Shurtliff. Later, his mother married Earl Long and Lou took his last name. After his mother’s untimely death, he lived with his aunt and uncle, Lester and Edna Shurtliff, who welcomed him into their family as their son. On March 15, 1957 he married Diann Doty in the St. George LDS Temple.
Lou lived most of his life in Overton, Nevada. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He then earned his Bachelors Degree in education from BYU. He taught school in Mesquite for one year, Las Vegas for two years then for ten years at Moapa Valley High School and Overton Elementary where he had the opportunity of teaching two of his daughters in his fifth grade class. “Mr. Long” will long be remembered by his former students as a beloved teacher. He then changed careers and worked as an insurance agent for many years.  He loved to work in his yard and to go camping. He had a great sense of humor and loved to make us laugh. He loved trips to Disneyland, eating out with friends, especially seafood buffets, soda pop, and going to the movies. He loved history and reading and was the world’s best storyteller. He loved going on road trips to anywhere and everywhere. If we couldn’t find Dad, we would check over the back fence at Grandpa’s and Grandma’s house. He loved spending time with his folks and his sisters. He also really loved his pets but he loved his sweetheart, Diann, best of all. He will be remembered as a kind and loving husband and father.
Survivors include his wife Diann; one son and five daughters: Melissa (Alan) Ozaki of Las Vegas; Heather (Steven) Warren of Salem, UT; Lanette (Eric) Higgonbotham of Las Vegas; Amy (Jeff) Bryant of Las Vegas; Michael of Eugene, OR and Beth Blasingame of Lebanon, OR; 21 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and one sister, Josephine Sudweeks. He was preceded in death by his parents, his aunt and uncle, Lester and Edna Shurtliff, his son-in-law, Freddie Preciado, two sisters Myrna Conger and Romajean Andersen, one great-granddaughter and one great-grandson.
